Laura Hillenbrandt’s masterful book Unbroken presents the amazing story of Louis Zamparini, a true American war hero. Shot down over the pacific during World War II, He survived nearly fifty days in a tiny inflatable raft, without food or water.
Close to Japan, he was captured by the Japanese and imprisoned in a forced labor camp. Amid terrible conditions, he endured more than two years of abusive torture. And yet, he somehow survived and eventually returned to the US after the war.
But the trauma—the deep internal wounding—proved to be inescapable. He sank into the anesthetic of alcoholism and rage. Desperate and suicidal, he stumbled into a Billy Graham crusade in the early fifties. There, in some way he could hardly grasp, his heart was melted… and completely healed.
From that day onwards, Louise dedicated his life to serving kids and teenagers. He continued until death last year, at the age of 97. This healing, this transformation, is the real story of Unbroken.

We avoid this place out of fear, out of shame– or just plain old denial. But I have discovered that every child and adult is– whether we know it or not– on a journey; a Journey into Love.
When the Heart Melts is merely an invitation– to you. This inner door within you: it’s real. I know. I’ve not only been gifted to find this door– I’ve been through it. And I’ve learned this heart breaking truth: ninety eight percent of adults will die of nothing more serious than old age– and never find this inner door, let alone go through it. Although it would be gratifying to be seen as having “expertise” the fact is– much to my amazement– I happened to stumble into encounters of such intensity they not only proved to be utterly liberating– like being freed from a cage underwater just as you are about to drown– they imparted to me the certainty that I had to share the how and the why.
This has proved to be far more difficult than I ever imagined. People are staggeringly complex. The internet is riddled with scams and hype, not to mention thousands craving attention, recognition and significance. How (I asked myself) will anyone ever find truth within such a storm of confusion? This is surely like searching for a flea in a sandstorm!
